Petra Cortright is an interdisciplinary artist known both for her role in the “Net-Art” movement – a movement that uses the Internet as its primary source – and as a “post-Internet artist” which is to say of the generation after the progenitors of Net-Art. She creates each unique piece by harvesting images from the internet, loading them into Photoshop, and then manipulating, stretching, and carving them up. She invents her own icons and marks using digital paintbrushes to make her brushstrokes, combining these with the manipulated and appropriated images.
Petra Cortright’s exhibit for Luminex 3.0 is an environment that encourages dreams and serenity. Inspired by the Channel Islands of Santa Barbara and the Sea of Flowers in the book of Narnia, Cortright creates a surrealist landscape that resonates deeply with the theme of escapism. By appealing to urban audiences, Cortright encourages viewers to immerse themselves in the work where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur. The emphasis on beauty, optimism, and possibility in this piece provides a refreshing contrast to urban life. Music by James Whipple.
